Twin Labs' DMAE: Natural Brain-Enhancing Chemical
Written: Mar 08 '03 (Updated Mar 08 '03)

Product Rating:
Pros: more pure and effective form than GNC brand; easy to swallow; price

Cons: question of effectiveness over sardines; can be harmful

The Bottom Line: Eating foods high in choline also may help you just as much. That's eggs and liver especially and I supplement.

jankp's Full Review: Twinlab Dmae - 100caps Amino Acids
After reading Nicholas Perricone’s bestseller, The Perricone Prescription, I was curious about his avid belief in the benefits of supplementing with a chemical very similar to plentifully-found choline that is naturally made by our brains. This chemical, shortened to DMAE, is concentrated in sardines and salmon and different from choline in that it can cross the blood-brain barrier and, I guess, increase the number of neurotransmitters in our brain. As we age or are beset by neurodegenerative disorders, it becomes more important to replenish the impaired neurotransmitters so crucial to the way we think, feel, move and even sleep. Dr. Perricone claims that for years he has used DMAE in his dermatology practice to get rid of aging or liver spots and firm the skin, but in my three-day online research, I have not read of any one else believing this.

I looked first at the GNC brand of DMAE, then the Twin Labs brand. With assistance from a store clerk, I realized that the GNC brand is a less pure and effective form because it is a big, 250 mg salt tablet you need more of, four is suggested, to attain the effectiveness of the recommended one Twin Labs hard gel capsule of only 100mg. There is also a liquid form a dollar more expensive that I’ve read may be most effective because you squeeze drops of it under your tongue or on the sides of your mouth.

In my further research I found that Dr. Andrew Weil (drweil.com) does not recommend DMAE, that it may take a week to notice improvement in my brain’s functions (from wholehealthmd.com), that senile people and kids with Attention Deficit Disorder have shown the most benefit with supplementation and that the original form of DMAE, deanol, was taken off the market in the early 80s and the newer forms are found in health food stores, but not recommended by the FDA as a drug or food supplement, I think. Nutritionally-minded doctors, I’ve also read, will prescribe it instead of Ritalin.

An article about DMAE as an anti-aging supplement was also compelling:.
http://www.lef.org/anti-aging/chap7.html and what I took from that is the best dosage as discovered through studies with mice, which is 100 mg and no more than 300 mg. I started out with 100 mg., then increased to 200 and 300 with no side effects or improvement in memory, mood, energy or ability to sleep (have no problems), but it’s probably too early to tell if it will help me in any way. I’m fairly young and quite healthy in mind and body, so I’m not the best candidate for DMAE’s benefits.

Perhaps, too, the ideal way to get DMAE is simply by eating sardines and salmon. Perricone discouraged me by saying I’d have to eat a pound of sardines a day, but I’m questioning whether he just wants to sell his supplement. He sells a lot of expensive supplements and lotions that all are so necessary, according to him, but in my research of customer reviews of his books, no one has taken the supplements or used his topical DMAE lotions without going on his low glycemic diet where lots of salmon is consumed.

I will have to try to find out how much DMAE is in a cup of sardines because if I decide to go off my vegan diet, I think sardines are a less expensive, less depleted and possibly less tainted choice, as well as being a great source of omega-3 fatty acids and super antioxidant coenzyme Q10!

Can I recommend Twin Labs DMAE, though? Yes, if you hate sardines, anchovies and salmon, which young children and many of us will. It is at least a better choice than the GNC brand, although online buying may be cheaper than the $8.95 I paid for 100 capsules. It may be visibly or invisibly harmful if taken in dosages higher than 300 mg and anyone with schizophrenia and depression should stay clear of it, although eating fish cannot exacerbate your problems. Eating sardines sounds like a wiser choice, but perhaps not as practical or helpful if large amounts are needed.

On a final note, if you decide to try this brain-enhancing supplement, take it in the morning with your vitamins, minerals and/or herbs because it might keep you awake at night if taken at night. I will update this review to let you know how I’ve fared with DMAE so if you’re interested in that, please leave a comment. Thanks! I hope this has been helpful to you.
