Swine flu precaution measures - what can I do to avoid it?
Written by John on April 28, 2009 – 7:01 am -

Most of you have probably heard about this possible pandemic . Currently, those living in America, Canada and Mexico are facing the greatest risk of obtaining the Swine flu although it seems the virus is spreading across to all parts of the world. Before I proceed to talking about measures you can take to minimize your chances of getting it, let me explain what a Swine flu is.
What is this ‘Swine’ flu?
Swine influenza virus (referred to as SIV) refers to influenza cases that are caused by Orthomyxoviruses endemic to pig populations. SIV strains isolated to date have been classified either as Influenzavirus C or one of the various subtypes of the genus Influenzavirus A.
Is this a new mutated virus of some sort?
Nope. It has actually been around for a while. Swine flu infects people every year and is found typically in people who have been in contact with pigs, although there have been cases of person-to-person transmission. Symptoms include fever, disorientation, stiffness of the joints, vomiting, and loss of consciousness ending in death. Swine influenza is known to be caused by influenza A subtypes H1N1, H1N2, H3N1, H3N2, and H2N3.
I hope that gives you some background details on what the Swine flu is. Now for the important part. How do I minimize my chances of getting it? Here are a few pointers.
1. Do not visit or travel by pig farms. As I’ve stated earlier. SIV “refers to influenza cases that are caused by Orthomyxoviruses endemic to pig populations”
2. Avoid eating any pork products, especially if they are from Mexico or United States.
3. Always wash your hands after eating or doing any activity which involves physical work. Young adults seem to be the most vulnerable as 149 people - all aged between 20 to 50 - have died in Mexico.
4. Avoid touching objects in the public (e.g. handles, toilets) as much as possible. You don’t know if the last person who touched it contracted the virus or not so always be on alert.
5. Stay away from crowds. Close proximity to other people will greatly increase your chances of obtaining the virus.
6. If you notice any symptoms of the Swine Flu then go see the doctor immediately and avoid coming into contact with others. Common symptoms include a high fever and body aches.
Remember. Despite the increasing number of people dying from Swine Flu, there is medicine out there which will help you get rid of the flu if you ever contract it. Just be precautious at all times!

Actually I would disagree with the suggestion that swine flu hasn’t mutated. This is because of several reasons.
If swine flu has been around for a while, why has it not been constantly on the news. The only reason that there is fear of a pandemic is because they believe that there is a distinct possibility of swine flu’s mutation into a infectious (person to person) rather than pig to human infection.
This hypothesis was made my health officials as people have reaslised that people without contact with pigs have fallen ill to swine flu.
Other than that, good read, keep up the goodwork!
